11/5/2023 0 Comments Scorpion beach santa cruz islandLong-Term Monitoring Surveys at Scorpion Rock were established in 1994, and are done by Channel Islands National Park. The primary coastal orientation varies at this site, and it is well protected from direct northwest swells by Scorpion Rock (for which the site is named). Scorpion Rock is dominated by a mixture of consolidated volcanic bedrock and boulder fields, and the area surrounding the site is comprised of a mixture of consolidated bedrock, boulder fields, and sandy beach. The moderately sloping site consists of moderately uneven terrain, containing few cracks and folds. This site consists of two areas: the main site and the Hesperophycus plots, on rocks separated from the main island. This site is located in an Area of Special Biological Significance (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz Islands ASBS) within the Scorpion State Marine Reserve in Channel Islands National Park. Scorpion Rock is located in the Northern Channel Islands, within the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, on Santa Cruz Island, California. Head downhill here past the campsite and you’ll complete this loop hike with a return to the Scorpion Bay Visitor Center.Scorpion Rock Click here for Long-Term trends The trail is rutted here with loose top soil, so make sure to plant your feet with accuracy.ġ.4 Miles- You’ll reach a trail junction where you’ll want to take a left and head south towards the Scorpion campsite. There are plenty of view points that don’t require hikers to take any risks or chances, so enjoy these and avoid the ledges.Īs you leave Cavern Point behind, you’ll begin a downhill stretch of hiking with ocean views to your right hand side. These bluffs fall straight down to the ocean and onto very rocky surf. I know this usually goes without saying, but please be very careful on this hike and mindful of your footing. Make sure to stay right at the junction to continue around Cavern Point towards Potato Harbor and the campgrounds. We decided to pack our dinner up from the campsite and found a place to stop and enjoy the views just off of the trail.ġ.1 Miles- You’ll reach a trail junction just after hiking for around 1-mile. This is a great hike to enjoy at sunset, as you’ll start to see day turning into night from this point on. On this hike, we got to enjoy sparkling hills of blooming mustard just as the views of Scorpion Bay opened up.Īs you look back to the east, you’ll see the beach of Scorpion Cove, and on a clear day, the silhouettes of Anacapa Island and the coast of the California mainland.Ĭontinue on the trail heading west, and you’ll begin to approach Cavern Point. You’ll see splashes of red, purple, yellow, and blue all over Santa Cruz Island. Most importantly though, Spring brings wildflowers in abundance. The weather is warm and usually pretty dry. Spring is a great time to visit the Channel Islands. Continue on past the outhouse and climb the trail of wooden steps that take you out towards the bluff. There are many historical buildings at Scorpion Ranch that are well worth visiting. You’ll see a trail sign that says “Cavern Point Loop Hike”.Īfter passing by the visitor center, the trail begins climbing up past the old Scorpion outhouse.
